Glompers and free huggers

Postby Arkayen on Tue Jun 03, 2008 12:36 am

Gonna ask this early - please - NO GLOMPERS! or something to discourage them! Friends is one thing but it is getting out of hand!

Several people are getting hurt by people running up and glomping them and others are breaking costumes. This past expo I saw some stupid girl doing it to a Storm Trouper - do you have ANY idea how much those suits cost?! This is not fun, not big, not clever. When I dressed as Fox McCloud, I was injured by a group thinking it was LOL's and it resulted in a minor fracture to my nose and a nose bleed. There have been complaints about them before and I am not saying dont do it - I am saying dont do it without asking!!!! Its not unreasonable, its very fair. A bit of consideration will make everyones weekend better.

Also, was shocked to hear Free Hugs were being given a slot in the expo book in May. I, amongst many others have concerns about them. Aside from the fact that some people just dont ask, then mess up your costume or hurt you, there is a safety aspect to consider. Once in a blue moon is kinda ok but now everyone grabs the scrappiest bit of paper is offering other stuff - not just hugs. Some jokingly offer far worse but please, this is a family event. Regardless if your cosplay character is a pervert, doesnt mean you have to be.

I know this is gonna wind up some people but I am not saying it should be stopped, just toned down to be sensitive to other attendees and for safety!

I fully agree that the more brutal ones should be stopped. I mean, if we aren't allowed to have decent weapons due to danger, when some of us are responsible enough to handle them, then people should get warned for behavior like that.
This may sound slightly hypocritical coming from a member of the otaku trioka, as our two youngest members were using the toddler restraint, which was intended to control Mini Otaku, as a method of 'catching people' for hugs. One thing they always try to ensure however, is that they don't hug people with obviously delicate and expensive costumes, and they always slow down. There's no running high speed glomps from us.
My biggest issue in May was the sheer quantity of civvie glompers. There were so many scene kids just there with signs, thinking it gave them an excuse to attack people. Seriously, i refuse to hug L cosplayers who wear shoes, why would i award an invasion of my personal space to someone who doesn't even try?
Not that they are all that bad mind you; There was a lovely guy there on sunday who wasn't in cosplay, but he asked ever so nicely for a hug, and he was a good hugger.
There should be a rule that says, if someone has a hug sign or has given you verbal permission, you can hug them. That way, no one gets hugged that doesn't want to be.
end of ramble. xx

I think permanent banning of free huggers should be carried out.

If someone comes up to me and asks politely if they can hug me, that's fine. (Please note that this won't be considered a free hugger)

If someone comes running up with a sign, blocks my path, waves the sign then pounces on me, I'm pretty much ready to go for GBH there...

Or, equally annoying, if someone walks around shouting "FREE HUGS!" at the top of their lungs looking for just a shred of human contact to fix their bruised egos caused by their daddy never hugging them...that's not cool either.

lol i propose we inaugerate the age of 'A.F.H.S' (Anti-Free-Hugs-Security) and just make sure that people with the intent too (namely the sign people) are well informed that unwanted glompings will earn them a personal complaint.... i agree it IS getting out of hand and i love hugs but you can have too much of a good thing... especially when its rammed down your throat :\

This has been on DA for a few weeks, even before the Expo started and i've waited before someone decided to mention it.

Although i did have people politely come up and ask for free hugs, which i refused because i don't just go hugging strangers, even if they're supposed to be 'One of us' i think it's amoral for them to be jumping people and/or shouting out for free hugs.

Some girl practically screamed it out, i was literally close to throttling her D=<.

I'm not saying it's wrong for OTHERS to go hugging people politely if they both consent to it, but considering my point of view is someone who doesn't take part, it is rather annoying.
I got a frown from someone i turned down a free hug on, it's stupid, and has anyone noticed that quite a lot more of these 'Free huggers' are male?

It's the paedophilia all over again =-=.

It's also a lot of scene kids/chavs, they just don't realise the amount of effort that goes into a lot of Expo-goers costumes.
When i heard about the hassle Mooze got in his costume, not just about the glomping and such, i was like =O but my mouth was open for like....10 minutes o_O

At least you lot didn't have people punching and kicking your cosplays... Can i have permission from the organizers to kill people that do that kinda thing?

We just look too grouchy, I guess

Oh god i remembered something.

Some idiot at the start of Expo while lining up, while you had the few people like Stormtroopers and the Ghostbusting lot go up and down the aisles, some idiot literally jumped them like hell, the security had to pull him off!.

And like i said in Matt's thread on the Cosplay section, don't bother with a list, if Arkayen thought it a good idea she'd have done it.

Thing is, it's not people who are from DA and Expo forums are the bad ones, it's people who don't use them and are completely blind to it.

I believe it was Kelly or someone else in that sort of DA circle of friends that were doing a no glomping list in their journals.

I think Mooze should sneak up on the people he sees glomping people, then right after, tackle them to the ground, Mooze, do that, it shall amuse me >=D

I'm thinking of just making a "Do not Want" sign with Dan's face here http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t85/ ... om/074.jpg

So whenever asked for a free hug just point to the sign... oh yes

See, the origional idea for Free Hugs was a good one- a general message for people to spread the love and be more open to one another. However, a lot of people don't see this, they just use events such as expo to get hyper and running tackle people when they are unawares.

And it is the people who are not on these forums or dA. How does one warn them of this? Carrying around a "free anti-hug" or "free deaths" sign is all well and good but some people would just see this as spite and carry on regardless.

Perhaps a new Expo legistation should be created, something on the official site or near the entrances of expo or SOMETHING. Politely coming up to someone and asking for a hug because you like their cosplay or are genuinely being nice is one thing. Flailing around and screeching like a banshee for a hug is another.

If people can see that this is an OFFICIAL expo thing then people would be less inclined to do it. They can do it for weapons and/or props which can be dangerous, why not for these people who genuinely do not have a clue?

Don't BAN free hugs T^T

Some people just need to tone down their energy levels and think before they jump on folks or constantly pester them. I remember being glomped and I wasn't in cosplay, it was funny at first but after the third time I just got annoyed >.<

I am a free hugger, was "for great justice" in May. But I'm never pushy and know that a no is a no ^__^" Meeting new people is fun as so are hugs, I ened up talking for a while to people me and my friend hugged on the Saturday. I think others should just take into consideration the effort cosplayers have made and how fragile their costumes may be, think before they go for the kill. ALSO, when hugging non-cosplayers - like me - to check how they are built before deciding the strength of hug. Some guy squeezed me until my back went all funny, giving me pain for the rest of the day D=

Signs should be put up to make people take in consideration their actions before doing them. I people kant reed then they deserve what they get from the angry victim *nods head*

Be polite.
No is no.
