What would you consider to be 'retro'?

Postby Toadsanime on Wed Jan 07, 2009 9:36 pm

This discussion point has occasionally come up a little in some random threads, though it has not been dug in to. So, how old do you think an anime must be for it to be considered 'retro'?

I think that the differences between 'old' and 'retro' are sometimes muddled, though it also depends on your age. Though some even claim for Dragonball Z to be 'retro', I wouldn't even consider the 13-year-old Escaflowne to be 'retro'. Old, yes, but not retro.
I'm only 16, so Escaflowne is obviously retro for someone of my age, though isn't generally retro anime. 25+ years, as someone recently also pointed out, should seem efficient enough for me to call it 'retro'.

What are your views then, and what effects them?

Dragonball Z isn't retro. Dragonball on the other hand... is coming to its 25 year right? So I'd call that retro.
ESCAFLOWWWNEEEE. My dear, dear escaflowne. Mentioning this show to under 16s makes me realise how old this show is -_-.

But I know so few retro titles. TT^TT

Well, as I've said before, at least for me, retro is about 20-25 yo. Shows like Queen Millenia, Cobra, Rose of Versailles, Minky Momo. But it's probably I grew up watching that stuff
Escaflowne is not retro :)

The first movie in the Macross series I suppose?

It turned 25 last year or perhaps the year before.

If 1989 is the retro cut off age then there are LOOOADS of retro anime.

Tenchi Muyo, DBZ, DB, Gundam Wing, Berserk etc etc.

Wtf? Apart from the Dragonballs, those are all 90s anime.

I'd agree that 80s anime are where I'd start calling things retro.

Hmm, I suppose that would be a good way of looking at it, then. In that case, 'retro' would differ to each person. That may cause a little confusion, though.

I disagree. I mean, Cowboy Bebop has slipped past that limit now, I'd think. Definitely can't see that as retro.

Agree with the 80's and before as retro, though would add sailor moon ('92) and cutie honey to the retro list.
left for a few weeks and have returned to find changes ...

I wouldn't consider Sailor Moon as retro, personally, seeing as it came out on the same year that I was born in. It would have to be 1991 or earlier for me to even contemplate it being retro. :D

in terms of retro, i think its just that feeling of
nostalga we get when we stare and an xbox 360
and then look over too our dreamcasts and see how
much things have changed.
the best thing i remember was the first soul calibur,
the first 3d sonic the hedgog was fun too.
