For some reason, if I don't hold the back-bar, I can't read the arrows right! xD I don't know why! xD I only tend to hold it with my right hand, though, and my left sort of hangs around my waist area. :p

That's...what used to be around 7 or 8 feet before DDRX, right?

Yep, the highest difficulty on DDRX is around 18 so I guess 10 steps = 18 steps on DDRX

In that case, yeah, I'd say about 12 steps is the threshold where I really can't move my feet fast enough AND keep my weight properly distributed, so have to lean back!

That said, I've taken to only holding on with one hand lately.

I've only recently started to let go of the back bar, and I've quite quickly adapted to doing it without (after several years of holding it pretty much any time I played). The only times I hold it now are when I'm either doing a really fast/hard song (like Max 300) or if I lost my footing a bit, just to regain balance. Because of this, I always have my lanky arms kind of drooped at my sides, and they tend to swing around an awful lot. It's kind of annoying.
A broken leg is not a figure of speech; it is a leg that is broken.

To bar or not to Bar? Not to Bar in my case.
Being a doubles person who can do all but 1 standard song on all DDR machines (Fastest song ever. Its faster than Max 300 (Which I can do just.)) Difficult songs just getting started on being all recreational has slowed me learning a bit. But I can do 6/7 feet difficult depending on speed.
Some songs on double though are kamikaze songs as you do have to travel a fair way in a short amount of time. Mind you I have a . sense of balance but these have been able hone it for me. So not using a bar has been good. :D

As I've been used to playing on Expert for a little while now, I've started learning to not use the bar, though still need it for some heavy songs at the moment.
